Welcome to Bellows Free Academy home of the Bobwhites and Comets. Our school is rich in tradition and we are very proud of our vibrant academic and co-curricular programs. We serve over 900 students in Franklin County and are a school of choice for many young people throughout the region.
Academically, we work to ensure the best environment possible for teaching and learning. The strength of our school is the many opportunities we provide so that each student can learn and grow. We are also committed to a positive school culture and climate that reflects the experiences our students have at The Academy and the relationships they develop with both adults and peers. Our school culture is directly connected to our core values. We believe that all students will learn respect, dependability and productivity and become effective problem solvers, community members and lifelong learners. The hallmark of our school is our faculty and staff who are dedicated to the success of each student. Three of our teachers and one of our assistant principals were recently recognized state-wide for their contributions to our students and programs. BFA was also honored as a Silver Medal School over the last two years by U.S. News and World Report. We are ranked in the top 10% of all high schools in the nation based on student achievement on standardized tests and our challenging curriculum for all students.
We were also recognized by the University of Vermont for our participation and success in the Advanced Placement Program. We are fully accredited by the New England Association of Secondary Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and were highly commended for our progress in meeting NEASC standards based on our 2015 report to the Committee on Public Secondary Schools. It is also important to note that we are dedicated to continuous improvement. Our Continuous Improvement Team completed a thoughtful and comprehensive plan in accordance with the Agency of Education Standards and Expectations. This work will guide our path forward so that all students will benefit from a clearly articulated curriculum, quality assessments and best instructional practice.
BFA continues to support vibrant, co-curricular and extra-curricular programs. Our extra-curricular activities and clubs involve approximately 584 participants in one or more offerings and our athletic teams have a total of 557 participants in one or more sports. Our boys and girls snowboarding teams have won state titles in the last two years and our boys hockey team was crowned state champs in 2016. Homecoming events and pep rallies continue to attract all students. The PowderPuff football game, which is now an annual part of Homecoming generated over $26,000 in contributions to support individuals and families experiencing catastrophic illnesses. We also hosted the statewide Unified Sports and Special Olympics competitions at our expansive Collins Perley Sports Complex. Our completely renovated gymnasium, where we held our opening day school assembly is a state of the art facility that reflects the support of our community. We’ve hosted a variety of engaging and enjoyable student events on our new floor.
