Olympic Spirit, Community Learning Across Maple Run

For two exciting weeks, the Maple Run Unified School District proudly celebrated student-centered learning through a schoolwide Winter Olympics at Fairfield Center School, a shining example of the incredible work happening across our district.

From opening ceremonies to closing ceremonies, Fairfield students in grades PreK–8 learned by doing. Each grade was assigned a different country and explored its culture, geography, and Olympic athletes. Students brought their countries to life through research projects, country buttons, chants, banners, and more, proudly representing their nations throughout the games. These creative, hands-on projects gave every student a chance to participate, contribute, and shine.

Competitions, including bobsled, curling, and hockey, highlighted teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship. What began as individual countries competing came together in a powerful moment of unity at the closing ceremony, when the entire school wore unified Fairfield Olympic shirts, celebrating one school and one community.

Why Project-Based Learning?

Project-Based Learning (PBL) is a different kind of learning. Research shows it increases engagement, strengthens collaboration and problem-solving skills, and helps students retain learning by connecting academics to real-world experiences. PBL also supports equity and inclusion by offering multiple ways for every student to participate, contribute, and succeed.

This spectacular experience reflects the heart of Maple Run Unified School District and the dedication of Fairfield’s educators, whose creativity, planning, and teamwork made meaningful, joyful learning possible for every student.
