Today, on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Maple Run Unified School District honors the life, work, and enduring legacy of Dr. King, a leader who advanced civil rights, justice, and access to education for all. His vision challenges us to reflect on our role as educators, staff, families, and community members in building equitable and inclusive spaces where every student can thrive.
Our schools and offices are closed today in recognition of this holiday, providing an opportunity to pause, reflect, and care for ourselves, our students, and our community. This day reminds us to Reflect. Connect. Care. : reflecting on our values, connecting with others, and caring for the world around us.
At Maple Run, our mission is to provide a meaningful, flexible, rigorous, and safe education for all students, ensuring that every child has the guidance, support, and opportunities they need to succeed. Our vision is to cultivate a welcoming environment where students and our community can tap into their love of learning, explore their curiosity, and grow both academically and personally.
Our core values guide this work:
Children first: Our students are at the center of all we do.
Safety and security: Ensuring students feel physically and emotionally safe.
Collaboration and relationships: Building strong partnerships with families and the community.
Joy and curiosity: Inspiring wonder, engagement, and lifelong learning.
Relevance and rigor: Challenging students and preparing them for the future.
Independence and perseverance: Supporting resilience, agency, and growth.
Flexibility and adaptability: Meeting the unique needs of every learner.
Respect and diversity: Valuing and including every member of our community.
Accountability and integrity: Upholding high standards and taking responsibility.
As Dr. King said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” Today is a time to reflect on how we uphold equity, inclusion, and opportunity in our schools and community. It is also a time to connect with one another and care for the well-being of those around us.
We thank all Maple Run staff, families, and community members for living these values every day and helping ensure that every student receives the best possible educational experience. On this day of reflection, let us all recommit to learning, equity, and service and to remembering the spirit of Dr. King.
Reflect. Connect. Care.
