Two Maple Run Unified School District music educators have been recognized by the Vermont Music Educators Association (VMEA) for their contributions to music education.
Cassandra “Cassie” Heleba, music educator at Fairfield Center School, has been named VMEA’s Outstanding New Music Educator of the Year.
Cassie has worked to expand music opportunities at Fairfield Center School, bringing back the school’s Jazz Band, which had been discontinued in 2019, and working to establish a Modern Band program. Through her creativity and supportive approach, she helps students build confidence, develop their musical skills, and explore their interests.
Alex “Rusty” Charpentier has been named VMEA’s Outstanding Music Educator of the Year.
Over the past decade, Rusty has built Maple Run’s string program, providing students in grades 5–12 with opportunities to learn and perform together. He also supports music educators across Vermont and established the District 1 String Festival, which brings together string students in grades 6–12 to collaborate, learn from one another, and celebrate music.
Both educators have expanded opportunities for students to learn, grow, and experience the rewards of making music together.
Congratulations to Cassie and Rusty on these well-deserved honors. Thank you for all you do for Maple Run students and music education in Vermont!
